Do we actually kayak inside of the caves?

We’ll determine whether or not it is safe to kayak inside Emerald Cave when we’re in front of it. There are several factors our experienced guides take into consideration, but your safety is our number one priority.

What do I wear?

We recommend wearing beach attire: a swimsuit, t-shirt, maybe a light windbreaker. Also, depending on the temperature of the water and how much wind is present, we might recommend a wetsuit—bring your own if you have one, or you can rent one from us

Where do we keep our stuff?

We have lockers available for rent (they're $6) if you want to leave your stuff behind. If you don’t want to rent a locker we recommend keeping your valuables in your car.

Will I be in a single or double kayak?

We have both double and single kayaks available to book. One double kayak is valid for a party of two.

What if I do not know how to swim? Am I able to do this?

Yes, you are going to be getting wet! It's part of the fun. All of our operations take place in the majestic La Jolla Ecological Reserve in the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The degree to which you will get wet varies daily, but the nature of ocean kayaki

What can I bring on the tour?

We recommend bringing as little as possible. Feel free to bring a reusable water bottle (no plastic please) or a waterproof camera. Do not bring anything that should not get wet. We have an expression at the shop, “If you love it, leave it.”

Where should I park?

There is plenty of parking in the residential streets surrounding our shop where you can park all day. Do not park in the lot adjacent to our shop: we don't own it, so if you park there you run the risk of being towed. We also do not recommend parkin

What is the age restriction?

The city of San Diego and the San Diego lifeguards have set the age requirement at 5 years and older.

What is the weight limit for kayaking?

The weight limit for each double kayak is 425 lbs, and the weight limit for each single kayak is 325 lbs.

No experience is required to come on a tour! We’ve had everyone from children to senior citizens who are first time kayakers come out and have a blast on one of our kayak adventures.

Is sea kayaking different than other kayaking?

Who will be taking me on the tour?

One of our experienced and highly trained guides will lead you and your group on the tour. Each guide has extensive knowledge of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and La Jolla Caves and is trained in water safety, First Aid and CPR.

You can do whale watching in kayaks?

Of course! Kayaks are perfect for whale watching since they're small and don't disturb our gentle giants, unlike some of the big commercial tour boats.

When are the best times to go on your tours?

The best time to go is whenever you want! Our tours start as early as 9:00am (depending on the day), and the last tours come back at 4:00pm.

Do you do Kayak rentals?

We rent kayaks all year long. If you haven't been out kayaking on the La Jolla Ecological Reserve before, we always recommend doing a tour first. Once you do a tour, we encourage renting a kayak and going out on your own.

What kind of kayaks do you use?

We use tandem sit-on-top kayaks because they are safer and more fun!

When should I arrive for my tour?

Please plan to be in our shop at least 30 minutes prior to your tour. Your tour time is when we go out on the water, and we leave as a group from the shop 10-15 minutes prior to your tour time. If we do not hit the water on time, the lifeguards can c

The San Diego Lifeguards have asked us not to permit our guests to take snorkeling gear out on the water while they are also renting a kayak or stand up paddle board. Guests may rent or use snorkel gear either before or after the kayak or stand up pa

Are there any rules or regulations?

We kayak in a Marine Protected Area, so nothing can be taken but photos. We will paddle and snorkel with sea life, and take direction from The Marine Protection Act of 1972.

Do you allow dogs?

We love dogs, but unfortunately the City of San Diego does not allow dogs on the beach during our business hours.

Is a double kayak valid for two people?

If you book a double kayak, you are reserving for a party of two.

Can waivers be signed upon arrival?

Waivers can be signed either beforehand using your confirmation email, or upon arrival at our shop. If you do plan to sign the waivers at check-in, please be sure to arrive 30-minutes before your scheduled time.

How much are the wetsuit rentals?

Wetsuits are optional and available at our shop to rent for $12 for the day. When you check in at the front desk, we'll go over all of the temperatures and conditions and help you decide if you need to rent one for that day.

Can a double kayak accommodate one adult and two children?

A double kayak is only valid for a maximum of two people. Unfortunately, we cannot fit more than two people in a double kayak. We do offer single kayaks as an option for our tours as well.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 48-hour change and cancellation policy. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, please make sure to do so at least 48 hours in advance. For groups of 10 or more, we have a 10-day change and cancellation policy.

Can my dog come on my tour/lesson?

Unfortunately not. We love dogs, probably more than the next guy, but dogs are not allowed on San Diego beaches between the hours of 9am - 6pm. These restrictions do not apply to service animals, as defined by the federal Americans with Disabilities
